A first for Missouri: Court OKs divorce for same-sex couple

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Divorce on Sunday, May 11, 2014. Same-sex marriage advocates may have scored a victory at the end of April when a Missouri judge granted a divorce to a same-sex couple. The women, who live in Columbia, had married in Massachusetts five years ago. The decision is significant for a number of reasons, not the least of which being that it may be the first of its kind in Missouri. While their union was legal under the laws of Massachusetts, it is not recognized here. The Missouri Defense of Marriage Act stipulates that a marriage must

Working toward healthy co-parenting is not impossible

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Child Custody on Friday, May 9, 2014. There is no question that going through a divorce can prove to be a rather harrowing experience for most men. On the one hand, you may feel great joy as you are no longer caught in an otherwise unhappy relationship and are free to start down a new path in life. On the other hand, you may have difficulty adjusting to new surroundings and, of course, new child custody arrangements. Indeed, the idea of co-parenting can rapidly emerge as one of the most difficult and stressful aspects of

Tips for taking a proactive approach to property division

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Divorce on Friday, May 2, 2014. An attorney that focuses on divorce and property division matters knows that money can be a sticking point, causing divorce proceedings to become heated or prolonged. While it may be the province of a divorce court to issue a divorce decree that addresses matters of property division, divorcing couples would be wise to take a more proactive approach to valuing the marital estate and preparing for their financial picture after the divorce. In that regard, a recent article provides good advice. As a preliminary matter, projecting one’s cash flow after

Little-known law could block Missouri fathers’ custody claims

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Child Custody on Friday, April 25, 2014. Being a parent is a tremendous responsibility, which is something many people embrace. Unfortunately, there are cases in which people are willing to step up to the plate, but are never afforded a fair chance to assume the role of parent. According a report, a seemingly archaic set of laws may put men’s ability to seek custody of their biological children in jeopardy in some cases. Through Putative Father Registries, 33 states — including Missouri — have tried to connect unwed mothers to the fathers of their children.

House bill would change child support rules for college students

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Child Support on Tuesday, April 22, 2014. The Missouri House of Representatives passed a bill last week that the Senate has already scheduled a hearing for. The bill relates to child support payments for children who enroll in an institution of higher education after high school. As the law stands now, a noncustodial parent must pay child support until the child turns 18. If the child is still in high school, the child support payments must continue until secondary school is completed or the child turns 21, whichever comes first. When it comes to higher

Amendment would protect parents’ rights to raise kids their way p2

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Fathers’ Rights on Saturday, April 19, 2014. We are still talking about a proposed constitutional amendment that has passed the Missouri House of Representatives. At this writing, the joint resolution was discussed at a Senate hearing but has not been placed on the calendar for general debate. As we explained in our last post, the amendment would preserve and protect parents’ right to raise their children as they see fit. This right belongs to both parents; the amendment does not differentiate between fathers and mothers: The term “parent” is defined here as “a biological parent
