Divorce rates expected to increase as unemployment rate decreases

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Divorce on Friday, May 6, 2011. When unemployment rates rose during the past several years, many sociologists also expected to see the divorce rate rise at the same time. However, when a recent study was conducted that looked at the effect of unemployment on marriage after the recession; sociologists were surprise to see the opposite is actually true and that the divorce rate has actually decreased. When looking at statistics from all 50 states – Missouri included – it was found that before 1980 when unemployment numbers had risen, divorce followed the same trend. But when looking at this

Two studies show the public favors equal custody

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Child Custody on Tuesday, May 3, 2011. Two recent studies found a difference between how the public is in favor of child custody arrangements and how the public believes the courts typically decide, which some say may account for the belief that the court system is slanted in favor of mothers. According to the study’s findings, many are in favor of joint custody equally split between two parents, even though in most situations this is not the norm and typically only done if both parents agree. In one university study participants were polled on how they believed

Possible changes to Missouri domestic violence laws

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Child Custody on Friday, April 29, 2011. Legislation that would make changes to domestic violence laws in Missouri for the first time in close to 40 years was recently approved by a 33-0 vote by the state’s Senate. If the bill is approved by the House, these changes could greatly impact issues related to family law. If the bill is passed, numerous changes would be made to domestic violence laws, which would include having standardized definitions for words like “domestic violence,” “child” and “abuse.” As of now those words tend to have different meanings in different laws,

Keanu Reeves paternity case highlights importance of DNA tests

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Fathers’ Rights on Friday, April 22, 2011. A lawsuit that involved Keanu Reeves highlighted just how critical it is to establish who the biological father of a child is, and how some mothers will make claims in order to secure child support. In the paternity case involving Reeves, a mother of four now-adult children was attempting to claim that he was the father of at least one of the children. In addition to claiming that he was the father, the woman was also demanding millions of dollars in not only back child support payments, but also spousal

Father unknowingly making another parent’s child support payments

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Child Support on Wednesday, April 20, 2011. One father recently found himself in a tricky situation as it was learned that for some time he’s been paying another father’s child support and didn’t even know it. According to the father, last summer he realized that even though he was making his child support payments on time, the money wasn’t actually going to his ex-wife and three kids. Instead, the money was getting mixed up in the system with another man who had the exact same name, and even an ex-wife with a similar name. Upon realizing of
