Finances can put a lot of strain on a marriage. So much so, that those spouses who argue more about money are more likely to end up getting a divorce.
According to one professor’s analysis, those couples who report fighting about finances at least once a week are more likely to end up getting a divorce than those couples who disagree about money only a few times a month. In fact, those disagreeing on finances once a week are 30 percent more likely to end up getting a divorce.
However, arguing about money is not the only role finances plays when it comes to divorce.
According to research published by the American Journal of Sociology, a wife is more likely to initiate a divorce if her husband is unemployed. However, in general, while a husband is more likely to leave a marriage, whether or not his wife is working typically does not play a role.
Researchers believe the reason for the disparity between men and women is the fact that while it has become more socially acceptable for women to work, it has not become as acceptable for husbands to stay home. This is particularly troubling in a current economy where job lay-off is a real possibility for many Missouri husbands.
Whether thinking about initiating a divorce, or being the one who is approached about a divorce, realize that ending a marriage is not the same as a breakup and that there is potentially much at stake.
