Recently it was reported that Kris Humphries rejected a $10 million divorce settlement deal from Kim Kardashian. Rather, the professional athlete wants to continue to pursue an annulment.
Upon hearing this, Missouri men might be wondering just what an annulment is and what the differences are between an annulment and a divorce.
In the most basic terms, an annulment treats the marriage as though it never happened. However, this is not something that a disgruntled husband can just file for. Rather, there needs to be good reason and grounds for seeking an annulment. Misrepresentation or fraud, concealment and a refusal to consummate the marriage are all primary reasons why someone may seek an annulment.
In the case of Humphries, he is reportedly seeking one under the reason of fraud as he wants Kardashian to admit that their marriage was nothing more than a publicity act. At this point though, Kardashian has reportedly stuck to her story that the marriage was based on love, not ratings.
One source also said that Humphries wants the annulment so that in the future, when he does fall in love and wants to get married again he’ll be able to still do so in the church.
Another twist to this story is the fact that while Kardashian and Humphries are still legally married, she is now pregnant with Kanye West’s baby.
When talking of children born out of wedlock, as will most likely be the case for Kardashian and West, in Missouri it is important to remember that if a father wants to ensure he has custodial rights, he must file a paternity action. Simply signing the birth certificate is not enough to ensure a father’s rights.
